Tiger Woods has not actually played in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the PGA Tour since the 2012 season.
Pebble Beach is arguably the most iconic venue on the PGA Tour calendar. It has hosted the US Open on six occasions.
One of those events came in 2000, when Tiger Woods enjoyed perhaps his greatest triumph. Woods finished 15 shots clear of anyone else – a major championship record which stands to this day.
Woods also came very close to victory three years earlier at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He would end the week in second, one shot behind Mark O’Meara.
Why Tiger Woods struggled playing alongside Kevin Costner in 1997
The event always sees a number of celebrities tee it up. The likes of Clint Eastwood and Bill Murray have been regular fixtures over the years.
And in 1997, Woods was paired with Kevin Costner, one of the most successful actors of the decade. He had starred in the film Tin Cup the previous year.
Unfortunately, Costner’s fame seemed to have a negative impact on Woods’ chances of victory that week.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Woods and Costner were friends. However, the youngster’s coach at the time, Butch Harmon, admitted that the fanfare around the actor did not always work in their favour.
“It’s difficult any time you play with a movie star.” Harmon said. “The seasoned veterans are used to it, but Tiger got irritated with some of the distractions that come with the tournament.”
